Behaviour Consultations

Some of our dogs can show behaviour which becomes problematic to us or a welfare issue for our dog. Common issues include Barking and lunging at people and/or dogs, growling when approached, displays of aggression, fearful behavior and confidence issues, struggling to be left alone and destructive behaviour.

An Initial consultation will last 1.5 hours and will be at your home address.

This session will consist of a discussion to establish:

  • Description of the current issues with your dog

  • The history of how the issues began / evolved

  • The history of your dog

The reason for this discussion is to look at establishing the root cause of the behavioural issue that you are describing with your dog, so that an effective training plan can be put into place.

I often find that once owners understand why they dog is behaving in a particular way they feel so much better.

Following this it is likely that some groundwork / foundation exercises will be explained which will form the initiation of a training plan to gradually look at modifying the behavioural issues you are experiencing with your dog.

Please note – with the majority of behavioural issues it is important to initiate early training AWAY from the behavioural issue itself.

We also need to look at a 'management plan' which is important in this process.

This may involve changes in your environment or routines which discourage or reduce the opportunity for your dog to practice the problem behaviour.

The more your dog practises a problem behaviour the more likely it is to become reinforced and strengthened over time. There is then a risk that your dogs’ response can become part of a pattern of behaviour which will then be more resistant to change.

Following your initial consultation, you will be given a report outlining our discussions and within that report will be the recommended number of sessions required where I will come and work with you to progress your training forward. These one-hour training sessions will also involve me attending your home address or other prearranged location.

Depending on the issues you are having with your dog it may be suggested that your dog is health checked by a Veterinary Surgeon at your own practice before training commences.

Improving a behavioural issue with your dog will take time, patience and consistency from you and your family
